If you've noticed white crusty buildup around your faucets or spots on your glasses straight out of the dishwasher, that's not just an eyesore — it's a warning. DFW water runs hard, typically around 8–9 grains per gallon, and those dissolved minerals are working against your plumbing every single day. The damage is slow, but it adds up fast.
Article 1

What Hard Water Actually Does Inside Your Home

Calcium and magnesium deposits — scale — coat the inside of your pipes, water heater, and appliances the same way cholesterol clogs arteries. Your water heater works harder to push heat through that mineral layer, burning more energy and wearing out sooner. Faucet aerators, showerheads, and dishwasher valves all narrow over time, cutting flow to a trickle.

Tankless water heaters are especially vulnerable. Their tight heat exchangers depend on clean surfaces to do their job efficiently, and scale can knock years off their lifespan.

Signs You're Already Seeing It

  • White or yellow crust around faucets and showerheads
  • Spotted glassware after the dishwasher
  • Stiff, scratchy laundry
  • A rumbling or popping noise from your water heater
  • Weak water pressure that wasn't always there

That rumbling water heater? It's scale and sediment on the tank floor getting cooked. Don't ignore it — a quick inspection now beats an emergency replacement later.

Pro Tip: Twice a year, unscrew your faucet aerators and showerheads and soak them in white vinegar overnight. It dissolves light scale buildup and keeps flow strong. While you're at it, peek at the connections under your sink for any crusty mineral deposits — they can signal bigger buildup deeper in the line.
Hard water is one of those problems that never announces itself — it just quietly chips away at your plumbing until something finally gives. If your water heater is rumbling, your pressure has dropped, or you're seeing heavy scale all over your fixtures, give us a call at (214) 444-9816 and we'll take a look before it turns into something expensive. — Brendan, Craftsman Plumbing | License M-43680
